In July 2026 the Government confirmed a decision to create a new East Sussex unitary authority, replacing ESCC and the district and borough councils. On 7 September 2026 the Government paused that decision and launched a review, and councils have been asked to cease implementation work. District and borough elections due in May 2027 — originally expected to be superseded by shadow-unitary elections — are, under the current position, expected to proceed on existing council boundaries instead; no date has been set for the review’s conclusion. Reform UK’s Crowborough county councillor has not stated a public position on reorganisation.
